Navigating the Airport with Ease!

October 26, 2020 By Marvelous Mouse Travels

If you have flown in the last few years, you know probably already know that getting through airport security can be stressful and may even lead to significant delays.  Before I became a Travel Agent, I used to work for Homeland Security as a TSA officer, and I have picked up a few tips that will help you navigate security easily and hopefully as quickly as possible.

Get to the airport two hours early.

First one you have probably heard over and over again, but it is essential, especially in larger airports.  While most of the time, this will leave you with spare time at the gate, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Many times, an entire checkpoint can be close for various reasons which can cause major delays, having extra time will ensure you make it to your flight on time. Don’t count on the airlines holding the flights even when there are significant issues with security.

Find the checkpoint with the shortest wait times.

If your airport is the hub for a major airline, the checkpoints furthest from that airline will typically have much short wait times.  Several airports are actually, now posting wait times near the airline check-in counters.  If you are in a larger airport, take a peek at these and see which ones are shorter.  But be sure you can get to your gate through that checkpoint first, many airports are set up where you can only access specific gates through certain checkpoints.  Some airports are even listing wait times on their websites.   Now if those numbers are low, don’t think you can now get to the airport later than the two hours, things happen, and those numbers can drastically change quickly.

Have your IDs and tickets out and ready to go

Once you arrive at TSA, have your IDs and tickets ready.  To help expedite, each person should be holding their own paper ticket, even kids.   Kids under the age of 18 do not need an ID to get through TSA, but the agent at the podium may ask them their name to verify they are the person on the ticket.  If you have digital tickets, make sure they are open on your phone and ready to go. Don’t wait until you step up to the podium to open the app.  Also, have a printed back up in just in case.  Phones are not always 100% reliable (cell service is out, battery dies, it decides to update at that exact moment, etc.), if you can’t pull up your ticket you will have to get out of line and back up to the airline check-in counter then back through the line.

Take out those toiletries.

To get through the line as quickly as possible, be sure to take out your toiletries, even if they are within the legal limit.  The limit is each item can be no larger than 3.4 ounces each, and they must all fit into a quart-sized bag, and only one bag per person (3-1-1 rule).  If you have them out, they will not need to search your bag if something looks slightly large or just strange.  Plenty of bags are pulled and searched just because the agent on the x-ray couldn’t tell what it was.  If they are in a bin, the agent can pick it up to make sure it is good to go.

It’s not just liquids.

The rule above is not just for liquids. It also goes for gels, aerosols, and paste.  That includes toothpaste, body scrubs, lotions, and even butter.  Yes butter, you would be surprised what people fly with. If it is weird, you are better off taking it out of your bag and putting it in a bin.  Things like the five pound Hersey Kiss you got at Hersey Park, or the giant bag of jelly beans, or the human femur (yes it happened), or your dog’s ashes.  Even though all of those are ok to fly with, they look very strange on an x-ray.  If you take them out of your bag, you will avoid having your bag pulled, swabbed, and searched.   Also, just because you bought it at the airport does not mean it can go past security.  Be sure to purchase those toiletries and gifts like snow globes after you get past security at the gate.   The exception to this is duty-free liquors, but they need to be packed correctly by the shop, and you must have your receipt.

Laptops out

One of the biggest reasons why bags get checked is laptops and other large electronics left in the bag.  If you don’t have a bag designed to have the laptop one side, take the laptop out of your bag and place it in a bin by itself.  If it is small enough, you can put stuff on the side but not on top or under it.  That goes even for jackets or hats.  If they can’t get a good view, they may have to re-run the bin slowing down the process and causing you a delay in getting to your gate.  Even if you do have a bag where the laptop is by itself, make sure there is nothing else in that section like papers, folders, or other electronics.

Everything out of your pockets

If you are traveling with a child under the age of 13, the entire family can go through the metal detector.  Stay together as a family until everything is in the x-ray machine, and then the officer at the metal detector should wave you through one at a time.  If you guys split up, they won’t know that you are all in the same family and may send some of you through the AIT (the body scanner).  Everyone over the age of 13 still needs to take their shoes off.

If you are not going through the metal detector, you will be going through the AIT (Advanced Imaging Technology).  Be sure to take off your shoes, hat, jackets, belts and everything out of your pockets and send it through the x-ray.  That means everything. Even tissues will be picked up.  Also, if you are wearing ‘bling’ on the back of your jeans, don’t be surprised if the machine picks it up.  Might want to save those for non-traveling days or you might end up getting a brief pat down to your backside (or where ever the bling is).

TSA Pre-Check

These tips will help you get through faster and without issue, but the number one way to get through security fast is to sign up for TSA Pre-Check.  The cost is around $85 for five years, so about $17 per year.  You do need to fill out an application and do a background check, but after you are approved, you can leave your shoes on and everything in your bag. You can even wear your favorite pair of blingy jeans.  On average passengers with Pre-check wait 5 minutes or less to get through security.

Disneybounding!

April 22, 2020 By Marvelous Mouse Travels

A BIG thank you to Jen McGurn for this fun post!

What on Earth is Disneybounding?

My next Disney World vacation is right around the corner! So of course, I’m planning out what I am going to wear while I’m there.

A few years ago, I stumbled upon something called Disneybounding. A blogger named Leslie Kay started the trend in 2011. Disneybounding is creating outfits that represent characters without full on costumes.

Here is an example of one of my favorite so far.

Generally, the characters and Disney cast members catch on pretty quickly. In this instance, Snow White asked me if we could bake Gooseberry Pies together. It was very cute.

My daughter and I absolutely love Disneybounding. Sometimes we even convince the guys to join us! Generally speaking, we keep our bounds simple and casual because we want to be comfortable while walking around the parks.

We tend to pick basic colored shorts and tees and then I order a character themed bow to attach to my ears for the day. I usually get the bows from Etsy or Hot Topic. Here is a fun Merida bound I did and she loved my bow!

So, as I said, we keep it basic, but some people really go all out. There are Facebook groups devoted to Disneybounding where people share ideas and ask for opinions. When you look up Disneybounding on Pinterest, you will see that people even add pretty cool accessories – from purses and belts to themed jewelry. For hard core Disneybounders, even the shoes need to be a part of the color palette. For me…comfort is key.

We did dress up our bounds a bit for our Disney Cruises. See if you can guess what characters we tried to represent.

For our next visit, I’m trying a few new bounds – I have the cutest ears for a Bing Bong bound and a cute Dalmatian bow for, well, a 101 Dalmatian Bound. I always love coming up with new cute ideas for our trips.
Have you ever Disneybounded? If not, do you think you might?

Tips for Traveling with Kids

June 13, 2019 By Marvelous Mouse Travels

Thank you so much to Stephanie Novarro for this great information on traveling with littles!

Anyone who know me knows that I love to travel. I have been traveling with my kids since my daughter was 4 months old. Some people look at you like you are crazy and wasting money on trips that the kids will never remember. But others, like me, understand why traveling is so important and they do it to.

Traveling with little ones, whether driving or flying, is different than traveling alone. The first trip we took with our daughter was supposed to be a quick 3-hour car ride down to Galveston for a long weekend. Well at 4 months old you can imagine that the car ride took closer to 6 hours with stops to feed and change her. If you are worried about the travel part of the trip, don’t be and just go with the flow and you will have a great time.  Make sure you plan ahead for extra travel time for feedings or potty breaks for the little ones. I will forever remember our daughters first time at the beach.

When you are flying with small kids it is important to make sure you have enough supplies in your carry on to keep the kids fed and entertained. On a recent trip back home to NY we had our two kiddos with us. At the time, our daughter was 2 and still in diapers and our son was only 4 months and still drinking formula. Our flight was diverted to Pittsburgh because of bad weather in the tri state area and eventually a couple of hours later the flight crew timed out. You can imagine what happened next; there we are with 2 small kids, 2 car seats, a double stroller and luggage boarding a bus to a hotel for the night in Pittsburgh. Had I not packed enough supplies in my carry on being stuck in Pittsburgh could have been a disaster.

How we react as adults in these situations will have an impact on our kids. Were we upset that we were stuck in the airport with 2 kids, sure we were but we never let our kids see our frustrations. While we were in the airport my husband and daughter rode the moveable sidewalks back and forth for what seemed like hours. She LOVED it; she thought it was the best thing. They even stopped and got some Hershey Kisses at one of the newsstands.

Some of the things I always keep in my bag for my kids are SNACKS, lots and lots of SNACKS! I like to have more diapers and wipes than I think I would actually need because who knows how many blowouts your kid will decide to have on the plane. I also take crayons and a coloring book, and of course the iPad.

My advice to you is not to be afraid to travel with your kids when they are babies or even young kids. In most cases, the kids are better travelers than some adults. Make the memories with your kids. My daughter loves to fly and loves to talk about all of our past adventures.

Park Bag Essentials

March 10, 2019 By Marvelous Mouse Travels

Thank you so much to Katie Eadie for this helpful information on what to pack for a day in the parks!

Going to Walt Disney World can be so much fun, but in my opinion, it’s good to be prepared for the long day ahead! That’s why it’s important to me and my trip to have the right things in your park bag.  Not everyone chooses to carry a backpack, and that’s okay, but when I go and have my kiddos, it’s important to me to keep all the essentials in a bag that they will need! And if you’re in Disney and have a cute Disney Bag, it’s even better!

If you do decide to carry a park bag, it’s important to not over pack it with things you don’t need! Here’s a list of 10 things I put in mine:

1. Ziploc Bag: I talked about this in another post, but Ziploc Bags are good for everything! Wet clothes, keeping things from getting wet, leftover snacks, etc. One thing I have always done is pack a gallon Ziploc bag with an extra pair of socks for everyone that way if your shoes and socks get wet on a Splash Mountain, you at least have a fresh new pair of DRY socks!

2. Baby Wipes: They’re good for everything! Sticky hands and faces, wiping up some ice cream someone might have spilled on a bench, even for a little refreshing cool down on a hot summer day!

3. Hand sanitizer: Because germs are EVERYWHERE! Use this!

4. Band-Aids: Accidents happen! Boo boos happen! Blisters happen! Band-Aids are your best friend! And I’m sure you can find some cute Disney ones to make the boo boo heal faster because the Band-Aid is obviously more magical if it’s Disney. ☺

5. Gum: Because Disney doesn’t sell it, so if you want it, you have to bring it!

6. Portable Charger: Good for charging your phone up to make sure you have enough battery to take pictures of EVERYTHING!

7. Chapstick and Sunscreen: That Florida Sun is HOT! Sunscreen is a must to keep your skin healthy and safe!

8. Light Jacket: For the evenings if it gets chilly.

9. Snacks: Snacks at Disney are expensive unless you’re on the dining plan, so it’s always a good idea to bring some extras just in case! We like to pack things like goldfish, trail mix, granola bars, and more easy stuff that is just grab and go!

10. Small Fan: We always find small battery operated fans at Walmart to keep in our bags for those hot afternoons! And the ones that are mist fans, are even better!
