For me, there's nothing like the fall at Walt Disney World. The decor, lighter crowds, special events... September is my go-to month for several reasons.
September is considered one of the lightest months of the year. Aside from Labor Day, there are no holidays this month to bring in major crowds. Most families are home preparing for the upcoming school year. Additionally, a lot of people don't want to take their kids out of school so soon. This results in September having less demand from family travelers. Even Labor Day Weekend isn't terribly crowded for these reasons.
You can usually count on Walt Disney World promotions during the summer and into September. Right now rooms are discounted up to 25%, and there is a separate promotion when combined with a journey aboard Galactic Starcruiser. But only through September!
Halloween starts in August at Disney! I absolutely LOVE walking down Main Street when Magic Kingdom is decked out for Halloween. All of the parks are dressed to impress this time of year, and there are special treats/drinks/menu items only offered at this time. Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party is one of my favorite events at Disney, and we enjoy going to Walt Disney World in September when ticket prices are not at their peak and the crowds are lower.
The World Showcase is one of my favorite places to be. It's even BETTER during the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival, with 25+ international kitchens scattered around the lagoon. Some of my favorite Disney memories are from during this time. There is nothing like entering the festival with your food and drink passport and checking off everything you've tried! The area can get crowded with waits at each booth, but when we visit Walt Disney World in September we can cover so much ground due to lighter crowds.
I have learned a thing or two in my 30+ years visiting Disney. Lower crowds, discounted pricing, early access to Halloween and festival fun make September the top choice for me when I plan a visit to Walt Disney World.
