It only took one sailing—and I was hooked! Avalon Waterways wasn’t just another river cruise. It was the perfect blend of luxury, freedom, and unforgettable moments that made me feel like the trip was truly mine.
Avalon Waterways is a premium river cruise line known for offering panoramic views, spacious cabins, and a more relaxed, inclusive experience than many of its competitors. It is part of the Globus family of brands. Avalon operates primarily in Europe, but also sails in Asia, South America, and Africa.
Avalon’s signature Panorama Suites are a game changed in river cruising. I didn’t just see the river—I lived in it. With wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling windows that slid open like magic, my Panorama Suite turned into an open-air balcony. You don’t just get a room with a view- you invite the outside in. Lying in bed and watching uninterrupted sights of castles, vineyards, and riverside villages float by on the Danube felt like a dream.
The SpaceRiver cruises usually come with tight quarters, but Avalon’s rooms were shockingly spacious. On Avalon’s Suite ships, about 80% of the staterooms are 200 square foot Panorama Suites, making them 30% larger than the industry standard. Everything felt modern, airy, and designed to unwind. I never felt cramped—not even once! Fewer passengers on board also means more elbow room in public spaces, lounges, and the dining room. This is perfect for travelers that value comfort and breathing room.
Forget the stuffy, formal cruise dinners. From local delicious wines at dinner to made-to-order omelets in the morning, the onboard experience was indulgent without being stuffy. Happy hour? Included. Espresso in the lounge? Included. Refreshment station and snacks in the club lounge? Included. Effortless luxury, without a thousand up-charges. I loved the flex dining approach that lets you eat when and where you want- early or late risers breakfast, bistro bites in the lounge, al fresco options, room service, or a multi-course dinner with local wine included. Complimentary beer, wine and sodas are offered at each meal. The daily happy hour included complimentary beer, wine, sodas, and the cocktail of the day. A favorite of mine was the daily tea service which included coffee, tea, and a selection of cakes, cookies, and finger sandwiches.
The Choice of ExcursionsAvalon goes beyond the cookie-cutter shore excursions with its Avalon Choice program. Whether you’re looking for classic sightseeing, active adventures (think kayaking the Danube or hiking to a medieval fortress), or immersive discovery experiences like cooking classes or wine tastings, you’re in control of how you explore. One day I biked along the Danube. The next, I toured a 900-year-old abbey. Some days I did both, or nothing at all. Avalon gave me the freedom to explore at my own pace—active, cultural, relaxing—whatever I felt like. And, best of all, most of the excursions are included!
The crew to passenger ratio on Avalon Waterways is about 1 crew member for every 4 passengers. The crew knew my name by the second day. The crew was fantastic with consistent excellent service. My cabin was serviced/cleaned twice a day and was done discreetly while I was out of the cabin. The fellow travelers were fun, well-traveled, and diverse. No crowds. No loud groups. Just a calm, friendly vibe that made every day feel easy. The open-seating dining and small group excursions make it easy to meet people. There was plenty of space on board to find a quiet place on the Skydeck or in Panaroma Lounge to talk to fellow travelers.
Sipping wine on the Sky Deck while gliding past a lit-up riverside village. A surprise onboard concert. The captain letting us peek into the wheelhouse. The live cooking demonstrations of the iconic Mozart Chocolate balls. The local Austrian storytellers to share their culture with the Golden Bonnet, songs, photos, and local homemade pastries. These weren’t just moments—they were memories I’ll never forget.
