Dark Universe is one of the five new themed lands at Universal Orlando’s Epic Universe. It transports guests into the eerie and immersive world of Universal’s classic monsters. Set in the gothic village of Darkmoor, this land pays homage to the legendary creatures that helped make Universal Studios a household name. If you’re a fan of moody atmospheres, spooky surprises, and cutting-edge theme park tech this is the place to be.

Personally, this was the land I was most excited about with the debut of Epic Universe and it absolutely did not disappoint. Dark Universe strikes the perfect balance of creepy and captivating, offering a family-friendly version of horror that stays true to its roots while welcoming modern park goers.
In Darkmoor, you’ll find two thrilling attractions, unique dining options, a monster makeover experience, and several surprises lurking in the fog...

This headline attraction is housed inside the iconic Frankenstein Manor, which looms ominously over the skyline of Darkmoor. The story follows Victoria Frankenstein, a descendant of Dr. Frankenstein, as she attempts to control all of the monsters including the notorious Dracula with help from her ancestors and her lab assistant, Igor.
The ride system is similar to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, but the experience is much more practical-effect heavy. While Forbidden Journey leans on screens, Monsters Unchained features impressive animatronics, physical sets, and jaw-dropping effects that make each ride-through feel unique.
Ride Details:
Without spoiling too much—I highly recommend riding more than once. There are so many details packed into the sets that you’ll notice something new every time.
This family-friendly spinning coaster is themed around the Guild of Mystics from The Wolf Man. Before boarding, you're warned by Maleva, the seer and leader of the guild, that you carry the mark of the werewolf. Soon after, you’re launched into the forests of Darkmoor for a thrilling escape from a hungry pack.
The amount of spinning depends on how your car is loaded, so each ride feels different. As someone who gets queasy on spinning rides, I was pleasantly surprised—this one didn’t bother me at all.
Ride Details:
Set inside an old inn built atop ancient catacombs, Das Stakehaus is spooky, moody, and delicious. The atmosphere is wonderfully themed, and it’s a great place to cool off and relax. As you might guess from the name, meat on stakes is the specialty here.
I tried the Darkmoor Black Wings, which were flavorful with a mild kick. The pimento cornbread skull that comes on the side is a creepy (and charming) touch.
Menu Highlights:
Tip: Mobile ordering is your best friend here, especially during peak hours.
Located in an old mill and decorated with monster-hunting trophies, this cozy tavern is home to hearty snacks, great drinks, and a fun surprise. Every 15 minutes or so, the windmill bursts into flames—accompanied by chilling music and sound effects. It's a fantastic detail and easy to miss if you’re not paying attention!

I tried the Hunter’s Garlic Stake (a garlic butter pretzel shaped like a stake) and the Burning Cheddar Bites with sriracha ranch—both were tasty and super shareable.

Menu Highlights:
Located near Frankenstein Manor, this snack stand offers shareable treats, drinks, and access to Coca-Cola Freestyle machines. It’s a great spot for a quick pick-me-up.
I recommend the:
Dr. Pretorius’ old lab has been transformed into a monster makeover parlor, where guests ages 5+ can become fashionably monstrous.
There are two makeover tiers:
Appointments are highly recommended and can accommodate 2 people per slot. Touch-ups are available throughout the day. Just keep in mind: once your makeup is complete, facial recognition won’t work for lockers or park entry, and alcohol purchases won’t be permitted.
As you explore Darkmoor, keep your eyes peeled—you might run into classic characters like:
These meet-and-greet moments are a fantastic way to immerse yourself even further into the lore.

I’m thrilled with how immersive and detailed Dark Universe is. It's a spooky-but-family-friendly addition to Epic Universe that celebrates Universal’s legacy while pushing the boundaries of modern theme park design.
Pro Tip: Visit both during the day and at night—the vibes after dark are next level!
