If the Galápagos has been sitting on your bucket list, let me just say this: it lives up to every expectation and then some. I recently returned from sailing aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II, and it’s truly one of the most incredible expedition experiences you can take. This isn’t a typical cruise. It’s immersive, educational, active, and wildly unforgettable.
Here’s exactly what you can expect when you sail on a National Geographic Galápagos expedition.

Every day in the Galápagos feels like a nature documentary you’re living inside, but in the best, most comfortable way possible.
Mornings usually start early with a breakfast buffet before your first excursion of the day. You’ll head out with certified naturalist guides in small groups, either by Zodiac (the expedition landing boats) or directly onto the islands for hikes and wildlife encounters. After your morning outing, you’ll return to the ship for either a second morning excursion or downtime while the ship repositions to another island.

A sit-down lunch is served at 1230pm each day, typically while sailing to your next destination.
Afternoons typically include another excursion, snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, or Zodiac cruising. You can choose what you’d like to do at each activity time and typically do not need to sign up in advance (however, some exceptions apply).

The evenings include a recap session /cocktail hour, where the naturalists review what you saw that day and preview what’s ahead. Dinner follows at 730pm, where you can choose from a variety of entrees, from fish to meat to vegetarian. Most evenings are usually spent enjoying the observation deck, chatting with fellow travelers, or simply soaking in the fact that you’re in one of the most unique ecosystems on earth.
This is not a “sit by the pool” type of trip; in fact, there is no pool or hot tub on board. The Galápagos is all about exploration and connection with nature.
Activities vary by island and itinerary, but you can expect:

Every excursion is led by some of the best naturalist guides in the world, and they truly make the experience. Every naturalist has to pass an exam with several hours of classroom instruction. They must also be a resident of the Galapagos & have a degree in Science or Tourism.
One of the best parts of a National Geographic/Lindblad expedition is how much is included. Once you’re there, you really don’t need to think about anything except enjoying the experience.
Your expedition typically includes:

It’s a true expedition-style all-inclusive experience with a strong focus on education, conservation, and comfort.
Must-pack items. You’ll be very casual onboard, think expedition chic, not formal cruise wear.

A National Geographic Galápagos expedition is one of those rare trips that genuinely changes how you see the world. It’s immersive, educational, adventurous, and surprisingly luxurious all at once. If you’re someone who loves nature, wildlife, photography, or simply wants a once-in-a-lifetime experience that goes far beyond a traditional vacation, this is it.
