Universal Orlando With Kids: Is It Worth It for Families?

By:  Emily Buss, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

Universal Orlando Resort is often associated with thrilling roller coasters and intense rides, which makes many parents question whether Universal Orlando with kids is really worth it. When families start planning a Universal Orlando family trip, it’s common to wonder if there will be enough attractions that younger kids can truly enjoy.

As a mom of two boys on the shorter side—and kids who are not big thrill-ride fans—I had the same concerns. I worried that Universal might feel overwhelming or geared toward older kids. What we experienced completely changed my perspective.

What Surprised Me Most About Universal Orlando With Kids

During our Universal Orlando family trip, we visited both Universal Studios Florida and Universal Islands of Adventure. I expected our oldest to love The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, but I honestly thought that might be the only place he would want to spend time.

Instead, the biggest surprise of visiting Universal Orlando with kids was how many attractions our boys loved that had nothing to do with thrill rides at all. The experiences they gravitated toward were playful, interactive, and genuinely fun for the whole family.

Minions Stole the Show

I was convinced we would be spending most of our time in Diagon Alley, but the real winner of our Universal Orlando family trip was Illumination’s Minion Land. Our boys absolutely loved Despicable Me Minion Mayhem, and the interactive Villain-Con Minion Blast quickly became their favorite attraction in the entire resort.

Villain-Con Minion Blast allows kids to stand and play which added a different interactive experience each time we went through it. We rode both Minions attractions multiple times!

As a travel planner, this is something I always remind families of—Universal Orlando with kids offers far more than coasters, and sometimes the simplest attractions end up being the most memorable.

Seuss Landing Was a Huge Hit

Another area that truly shines when visiting Universal Orlando with kids is Seuss Landing in Universal Islands of Adventure. Walking through this land felt like stepping directly into the books we’ve been reading to our boys since they were babies.

One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish had our kids laughing non stop, especially when Mom and Dad got sprayed with water by surprise. The Cat in the Hat brought the story to life scene by scene, and the High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride offered a calm, relaxing break while still keeping the magic going. Even Caro-Seuss-el became a favorite, with the kids discovering they could make their creatures move in silly ways.

This area alone made Universal Orlando with kids feel absolutely worth it and reassured me that Universal is a fantastic choice for a Universal Orlando family trip with younger children.

Jurassic Park Was a Dream for Dinosaur Lovers

Our boys are obsessed with dinosaurs, so Jurassic Park in Universal Islands of Adventure was a must-do. Camp Jurassic quickly became a favorite spot where they could climb, explore, and burn off energy while feeling like they were inside a real prehistoric world.

One of the most memorable moments of our entire Universal Orlando family trip was meeting a baby raptor and her handler. The handler was incredibly knowledgeable and patient, and our boys were completely captivated by every word he said. This is a must-do experience for families with kids, especially dinosaur lovers.

We also rode Jurassic Park River Adventure, which instantly became a core family memory—mainly because Dad was the only one who got completely soaked. The kids still laugh about it.

As a travel agent, I always encourage families to make time for experiences like this, because these are the moments kids remember long after the trip ends.

We Barely Scratched the Surface

One thing that surprised me most about Universal Orlando with kids was how much we didn’t even get to. Because our boys wanted to repeat their favorite rides, we never made it to DreamWorks Land in Universal Studios Florida, which includes attractions like Trolls Trollercoaster, Po’s Kung Fu Training Camp, and Shrek’s Swamp for Little Ogres. We also didn’t ride E.T. Adventure, which would have been perfect for them.

That’s when I realized how much Universal really offers families. You don’t have to do everything in one trip to feel like it was worth it. In fact, leaving things undone just gives you a reason to come back.

This is where working with a travel agent truly makes a difference. Having a flexible, kid-friendly plan helps families enjoy Universal Orlando with kids without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Are Harry Potter Wands Worth It for Kids?

For our family, buying interactive wands was absolutely worth it. Watching our boys cast spells throughout Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade was one of the most magical parts of our Universal Orlando family trip.

Our youngest struggled with the wand movements at first, but Dad secretly stood behind him and helped… without him realizing it. Magic and parenting win.

A knowledgeable travel planner can help families decide whether wands make sense for their kids, budget, and interests before the trip even begins.

What About Naps During a Universal Orlando Family Trip?

Our youngest still naps, so staying at a Universal Orlando resort was essential. Being just a short boat ride from the parks meant we could leave quickly when nap time hit and return refreshed later in the day.

When visiting Universal Orlando with kids, proximity matters more than many families realize. Being close to the parks made our days smoother and prevented meltdowns.

Choosing the right hotel is one of the biggest benefits of working with a travel agent, especially for families traveling with young children.

Is Universal Orlando Really Kid-Friendly?

After experiencing it firsthand, I can confidently say yes—Universal Orlando with kids is absolutely worth it. From playful lands like Seuss Landing and interactive areas like Minion Land to unforgettable moments in Jurassic Park, there is something for every age.

Not only did our boys love our Universal Orlando family trip, but they have both been asking when we can go back.
