Tricks and Tips for Visiting Universal Orlando if You Get Motion Sickness

By:  Katie Johnson, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

If you’re like me and you love theme parks, but you get a bit motion sickness when it comes to certain types of rides, for me it is the virtual 3D and 4D rides, here are a few tricks and tips to getting through Universal. While I am not a doctor, I have vertigo and get motion sickness super easy, and these are just the things that have worked for me when I go to Universal.  Please if you are concerned talk to your doctor before riding anything.

Further down I will give you suggestions on what rides are not that bad to ride and what to do if you start feeling nauseas on a ride, but now I am going to give you a few tips about ways to possibly prevent motion sickness.

  1. Take a non-drowsy Dramamine in the morning and bring some with you.
  2. Drink lot of water even if the weather is not super-hot.
  3. I like to carry peppermint, ginger or spearmint mints or gum with me.
  4. Talk to your doctor about certain motion sickness patches (these work great) or look online for ones.
  5. Don’t overeat before getting on the rides, this will ruin anyone’s trip, but will make you feel awful.

While the above items are great for prevention and making the motion sickness not bad, here are some other things that will help you once on the ride. I have found that a lot of the rides are great at the beginning, but slowly I start feeling not so great. The one thing that always helps that no so great feeling go away is shut my eyes and keep them shut till the ride is over! I know that stinks and seeing the ride is the whole point but if you don’t do this you won’t be riding any more rides as you will feel yucky. This also allows you to go on the rides with your family or friends or if you have a ride junkie like my son it allows you to hear the laughter and when you do solo trips with your kiddos you can go on the rides and not feel so bad. That’s it!  Closing your eyes on a 3D, 4D ride will not give you motion sickness. If you really don’t want to feel the motions, they do have stationary seats in all these rides.

Here is a list of rides I have to shut my eyes:

  1. Despicable Me Minion Mayhem
  2. The Simpsons Ride
  3. Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon
  4. Shrek 4-D

Rides like the ones below I am able to keep my eyes open, but certain times during the ride I need to shut them, YOU WILL KNOW.

  1. Fast & Furious – Supercharged
  2. Men in Black Alien Attack
  3. The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man
  4. Transformers: The Ride 3D

There is one ride that I have not ridden as I have been told I will be sick and that is Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. However, if you are a Harry Potter Fan like myself, I highly recommend you stand in the line and then at the end escape through the exit or tell a cast member. You don’t want to miss how amazing it is inside Hogwarts Castle!

See there is a way to enjoy Universal with the rest of your friends and family and not miss riding the rides and feeling yucky the rest of the day. Have fun, take breaks, and CLOSE YOUR EYES!!
