During my week sailing through the San Juan Islands and British Columbia, I met travelers of all ages, from a bright 12-year-old exploring with her grandparents, to solo adventurers, older couples, and multi-generational families traveling with their adult children. Some guests hiked forest trails and kayaked alongside seals; others preferred Zodiac rides or leisurely photo walks with the onboard naturalists. I’ll never forget watching our undersea diver share footage from that day’s dive, revealing starfish and sea cucumbers beneath the very waters we’d just sailed over. Or gathering in the ship’s lounge to hear the Indigenous stories of Alert Bay, learning about history, resilience, and living culture from those who know it best.
This isn’t passive travel. It’s active, engaging, and inspiring designed for those who want to understand the world, not just see it.
And while “expedition” might sound rustic, the National Geographic Venture was anything but.
Think cozy staterooms, locally inspired cuisine, and inviting spaces to relax after a day of discovery. Every evening ended in the lounge, sharing stories, photos, and laughter with new friends who felt like family by week’s end.
There was a beautiful balance between adventure and comfort, education and relaxation and that’s what makes it an ideal way to travel.

After disembarking, I’ve found myself replaying the moments that imprinted on my heart: the stillness of a misty morning at sea, the power of a drumbeat in the ’Namgis Big House, the sight of orcas surfacing just beyond the ship.
These are the kinds of memories that change how you see the world and how you see yourself in it.
