We have talked about all the amazing features the new Disney Wish cruise ship has to offer. From staterooms, dining, different clubs to entertainment this ship has it all and then some. The theming the ship has whisks you away to the lands you’re stepping into and you feel fully immersed in the story. The decor and little details never fails to amaze either. When it comes to entertainment one of the featured theatrical shows is the adaptation of The Little Mermaid. The story follows along the original animated film featuring talented performers, colorful costumes and stories about life under the sea! Alongside the reimagined story, Disney is now using many sustainable costumes and set pieces that are made from an unlikely material: recycled plastic.
How amazing and resourceful is that? More than 60 percent of all fabric used in the “Disney The Little Mermaid” was made from plastic debris recovered from the ocean. This includes 22 of the 25 costumes! This debris was taken from the sea and melted threads that were woven into material emulating fine silk, chiffon and cotton. But that’s not all. The fabrics were then dyed using a waterless printing method saving thousands of gallons of water normally used in the traditional dying process. The artists experimented with this process to find the perfect colors needed for the show.
Disney is known for their conservation efforts and this is another way they really go above and beyond to carry out their mission. But not only is Disney carrying out their long standing commitment to this conservation effort but also creating one-of-a kind, show-stopping costumes that add to the unique story being told on stage.
This effort didn’t stop here. Crew Member costumes across the Disney Cruise Line fleet at places like deck bars and Cabanas have already been replaced with fabrics made from recycled water bottles! And there are plans to make more sustainable costumes being added to other areas of the ship. The level of innovation that Disney Cruise Line shows is ever growing and evolving making it very exciting to see what the future holds!
