So far in January we have great things happening at Walt Disney World Resorts. The opening of the EPCOT International Festival of the Arts, there have been a ton of new merchandise releases, and now the celebration of the Space Mountain 50th Anniversary!

Did you know that Space Mountain was not the first mountain that Walt Disney created for the parks? It was actually Matterhorn Bobsleds which drew inspiration from Matterhorn Mountain in Switzerland. The Matterhorn Bobsleds were introduced inside Disneyland Park in 1959.
Space Mountain came next and was the first fully enclosed coaster for Disney. The design for the exterior was before its time, and the technology was not advanced enough for the project design that was created for it. It took until January 15, 1975 for the project to be completed and opened for guests at the newest Disney Resort, Walt Disney World.
Two short years later, the attraction opened a second location at Disneyland Resort, except with some modifications. The cart for the ride is longer, and there have been overlays of the attraction. The most recent is Hyperspace Mountain, which will return for Season of the Force which is from March 28 through May 11, 2025.

Space Mountain is a very popular attraction at both Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. The attraction even has its own merchandise line.
