Walt Disney World is full of iconic rides that make every visit unforgettable — from the gentle boats of it’s a small world to the high-speed thrills of Space Mountain. But if you’ve ever visited with small children, you know there’s one challenge every family faces: height requirements.

Some rides are open to everyone, but others have restrictions — and when one child is tall enough to ride and another isn’t, things can get tricky. Do you skip it altogether? Take turns? Wait twice?
That’s where Rider Switch comes in.
Disney created Rider Switch specifically for families with small children who can’t (or don’t want to) ride certain attractions. It’s one of those magical little tools that makes a big difference in how smoothly your park day goes.
Rider Switch is a program at Walt Disney World that allows adults in the same group to take turns riding an attraction while one adult waits with the child who isn’t riding. Once the first group finishes, the adults “switch” so the second adult can ride without standing in the standard line again. They get to join the Lightning Lane queue.
As a travel agent specializing in Disney, I always make sure my clients with young kids understand how it works, because it’s one of those simple systems that can save you so much time and stress.
Using Rider Switch is easy once you know the process.
When your family arrives at a ride with a height requirement, just tell the Cast Member at the entrance that you’d like to use Rider Switch. Everyone in your party must be present, including the non-rider.

You will Divide into two groups:
Party A rides first while Party B waits outside. (Up to two people in Party B can ride next.)
A Cast Member scans Party B’s tickets or magic band and gives return instructions.
Switch & Ride – Once Party A finishes, Party B will scan their ticket or magic band and enter with the lightning lane entrance (without waiting in the standard queue).
We’ve used Rider Switch many times at Disney World, and it’s been such a lifesaver.
Our family of four includes two boys with a pretty decent age and height gap. That means one is tall enough to ride almost everything, while the other is still too short for some of the bigger attractions.
One of the best examples of Rider Switch in action for us was on Flight of Passage in Pandora at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The ride has a height requirement of 44 inches, and our youngest isn’t quite there yet.

We approached the Cast Member at the entrance and asked for Rider Switch. They scanned my husband’s MagicBand and my oldest son’s MagicBand, and added the pass to their account. We decided that I would ride first with my older son.
Party A was me and our older son, and Party B was my husband and older son.
My oldest and I joined the standard queue while my husband and the little one went off on their own mini-adventure. They didn’t just wait by the ride entrance — instead, they explored nearby. They rode Na’vi River Journey, which is perfect for all ages, and then grabbed a snack while they waited for us to finish.
By the time we met up again, the timing worked out perfectly. My husband and older son were able to use the Lightning Lane to ride Flight of Passage without standing in the long line again — and my oldest was thrilled to ride twice. Did my youngest feel left out? Not at all, because he got to have his own special ride with Dad.
That’s one of the biggest perks of Rider Switch — older kids who meet the height requirements can ride again with the second group. To this day, my oldest still talks about the trip when he got to ride Splash Mountain five times while his little brother enjoyed nap time in the stroller!
When one parent and child are waiting, we try to make it a fun part of the day rather than “downtime.”
Sometimes that means exploring a nearby ride, grabbing a snack, or stopping for a few cute PhotoPass pictures. If our timing is really good we can even catch a show or parade while waiting.

Disney makes it easy to find something nearby, no matter where you are. When our younger son is waiting with me, we’ll often walk around and see what’s nearby to keep him entertained and part of the fun. This has resulted in several meet and greets that were just for him!
At EPCOT, for example, we’ve also stopped at the World Discovery Playground, which is a great place for little ones to burn off energy while the rest of the family rides Test Track or Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind. It’s close enough that we can meet up again quickly when it’s time to switch.
It’s all about turning the waiting time into another part of the adventure.
If you’re visiting with small children, Rider Switch is one of the best tools Disney offers. It saves so much time and keeps everyone included — no one has to sit out or feel left behind.
You don’t have to skip rides that have height limits, and you don’t have to divide the day into “parent rides” and “kid rides.” Instead, everyone gets to experience the park together — just in a slightly different order.
It also helps prevent those “long line meltdowns” that can happen when little ones have to wait too long. One parent gets to enjoy the big attraction while the other keeps things relaxed and fun outside.
And if you have older kids like we do, it’s a win-win — they get the chance to ride again, which always earns you “best parent ever” points.

We’ve learned a few things along the way that make Rider Switch even smoother:
Disney’s Rider Switch program is one of the most helpful options for families with young children. It keeps the day running smoothly, makes sure both parents get to enjoy the attractions, and gives kids — both big and small — a great experience.

If you’re planning your next Disney World trip, take advantage of Rider Switch. It’s one of those simple details that can make a world of difference when you’re traveling with kids of different ages or height levels.
And if you want help planning a stress-free, perfectly balanced vacation, a travel agent specializing in Disney can make it easy. I help families build custom itineraries that fit everyone’s needs — including how to use Rider Switch efficiently, what rides to prioritize, and how to make the most of your time in the parks.
Because at the end of the day, the goal isn’t just to check rides off a list — it’s to make magical memories together, no matter how tall (or small) your family may be.
