Planning the Perfect Day Trip to Universal Studios Hollywood

By:  Brittany Loose, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

If you’re planning a trip to Southern California, adding a day trip to Universal Studios Hollywood just makes sense. Whether you’re staying in Anaheim, Los Angeles, or building out a larger Southern California itinerary, Universal Studios Hollywood is the perfect complement. It offers something completely different from other theme parks in the area: immersive lands, thrill rides, and a real, working movie studio all rolled into one.

Planning the Perfect Day Trip to Universal Studios Hollywood

The good news? You don’t need multiple days here. With the right expectations and a solid plan, one full day is enough to experience the highlights without feeling rushed or overwhelmed. That’s especially helpful when Universal is being added alongside Disneyland or other Southern California must-dos.

This is also where having guidance from a travel advisor can quietly make the experience smoother. Universal Studios Hollywood has its own rhythm, layout, and crowd patterns. Knowing how to approach the day—especially if it’s your first visit—can save time, energy, and a lot of backtracking.

Start With a Solid Strategy

Universal Studios Hollywood may look compact on a map, but the park is built vertically. It’s divided into the Upper Lot and Lower Lot, connected by a series of long escalators. Without a plan, it’s easy to spend half your day going up and down instead of actually enjoying attractions.

The best approach is to arrive early and start in the Lower Lot, where some of the park’s most popular and thrill-heavy attractions are located. This area fills up quickly, so tackling it first can significantly reduce wait times. Here you’ll find attractions like Jurassic World – The Ride, Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride, and Transformers: The Ride-3D. The Lower Lot is also home to Super Nintendo World, which has quickly become one of the most in-demand areas of the park.

Once you’ve finished in the Lower Lot, head back up to the Upper Lot, which offers a mix of immersive lands, family-friendly rides, shows, dining, and classic Universal experiences. This is where you’ll find the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, along with attractions like Despicable Me Minion Mayhem and The Simpsons Ride. The Upper Lot is also where you’ll board the iconic Studio Tour.

Understanding this layout—and knowing which attractions are best tackled early—can make the entire day feel far more relaxed. When Universal is one stop on a larger Southern California itinerary, this kind of planning support is where a travel advisor can be especially helpful behind the scenes.

New This Year: Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift

One of the biggest reasons to visit Universal Studios Hollywood this year is the debut of Fast & Furious: Hollywood Drift, the park’s first-ever high-speed roller coaster.

This attraction brings true thrill-ride energy to Hollywood. Expect speed, sharp turns, and the over-the-top style fans of the franchise love. It’s a major addition to the park and is likely to draw long waits, especially later in the day. If this ride is a priority for your group, riding it earlier can make a big difference.

Escape to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

No visit to Universal Studios Hollywood is complete without time in the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. From the moment you enter Hogsmeade, the details pull you in.

Explore the shops, listen for magical surprises, and take in the view of Hogwarts Castle towering above the land. Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is a must-do attraction, blending cutting-edge ride technology with immersive storytelling. Flight of the Hippogriff offers a lighter coaster option, perfect for younger riders or those wanting something less intense.

And of course, grab a Butterbeer. Frozen, cold, or hot—it’s a classic for a reason. This land is also a great spot to slow down mid-day and enjoy the atmosphere before moving on.

Super Nintendo World + a Big Movie Moment

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie opening on April 3rd, there’s no better way to celebrate than visiting Super Nintendo World at Universal Studios Hollywood.

This vibrant, interactive land is packed with color, energy, and hands-on fun. Grab your Power-Up Band and join in by collecting coins, completing challenges, and interacting with the environment in a way that’s unlike any other theme park land. It’s immersive, playful, and surprisingly fun for adults—not just kids.

Because Super Nintendo World is extremely popular, access can sometimes be managed through timed entry or virtual queues, making timing and strategy especially important. A travel agent can help you stay ahead of this by letting you know if a special queue is required during your visit and how to plan around it.

The Must-Do Experience: The Studio Tour

If there’s one attraction that truly defines Universal Studios Hollywood, it’s the Studio Tour.

The tour runs about 45–60 minutes and takes you through the legendary backlot, where real movies and TV shows are still filmed today. Along the way, you’ll pass iconic sets, learn how scenes are created, and even revisit attractions from the park’s past—like the legendary Jaws experience—bringing a sense of nostalgia to the tour that longtime fans especially love.

Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the tour is packed with humor, history, and surprises throughout that are not to be missed. Every tour is a little different, which is part of what makes it so memorable—and a favorite for my family every single visit.
