There are trips that you take that you enjoy… and then there are trips that truly change you. My week aboard the National Geographic Endeavour II in the Galápagos Islands was absolutely the latter. I expected incredible wildlife and beautiful landscapes, but what I didn’t expect was a complete shift in how I see travel – and the world itself.
Before this journey, I had experienced traditional cruising. A LOT of traditional ocean cruising, to be perfectly honest. But expedition cruising with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is something entirely different. This isn’t about lounging by the pool or rushing from port to port. It’s about immersion, education, and connection.

Each day is guided by nature, not a fixed itinerary. Our schedule adapted to wildlife patterns, weather, and unique opportunities, which meant no two days were ever the same. Instead of being a spectator, I became an active participant in the environment around me.
From the moment we arrived, it felt like stepping into a living documentary. I knew this was a different kind of trip when we basically had to step over a sea lion on siesta on our way to board the zodiacs that would take us to our ship. Once onboard, we were quickly briefed before we took our first adventure onto the white sandy beaches of Santa Cruz Island. During my week in Ecuador, we hiked alongside marine iguanas, watched blue-footed boobies perform their iconic mating dance, and snorkeled with playful sea lions that darted around us like underwater acrobats. Deep sea snorkeling alongside Pacific green sea turtles will forever be a highlight of all of my travels.

There’s something profoundly moving about experiencing wildlife this closely, and it’s even more meaningful to experience it responsibly. With expert naturalists leading every excursion, we didn’t just see the animals; we understood them. We learned about conservation, ecosystems, and the delicate balance that makes the Galápagos so extraordinary.
One of the most impactful aspects of the journey was the expedition team. To call them merely our guides would not do them justice. Our Galapagos-native naturalists were passionate storytellers, scientists, and educators. Every hike, Zodiac ride, and snorkel came with context that only a local could provide, and each story and anecdote deepened that experience that much more for me.

Whether it was identifying bird calls, explaining volcanic formations, or sharing the history of the islands, they brought each moment to life. Their passion and expert knowledge transformed what could have been just another trip into something far more meaningful.
What surprised me most was the sense of connection I felt with both the people and the place. With only 96 passengers aboard the Endeavour II, our shared adventure broke down any barriers that existed quickly. By day two, our group felt less like strangers and more like a team.

Whether we were bonding over breathtaking wildlife encounters, Equator crossing, or solving the daily New York Times crossword puzzle, each nightly recap quite literally brought us together where we could relive the day’s highlights as one. To be quite honest, at times I felt as if I was attending some adult version summer camp… but an elevated, refined, and deeply enriching version where we were being served crudite and wine!
In many ways, this journey changed the way I think about travel. Travel is no longer just about where I go; it’s also about how I experience it.
Expedition cruising taught me to slow down, to observe, and to appreciate the world in a more intentional way. It reminded me that travel can be both adventurous and educational, luxurious yet deeply meaningful.

Most importantly, it reinforced the importance of protecting the places we visit. When you witness ecosystems as unique as the Galápagos firsthand, conservation becomes personal.
If you’re looking for a vacation that goes beyond the ordinary, the answer is a resounding yes. An expedition cruise isn’t just a trip; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you return home.
My week on the National Geographic Endeavour II didn’t just give me incredible memories; it gave me a new lens through which to see the world. And that, more than anything, is what makes expedition travel so powerful. Reach out to Marvelous Mouse Travels for more information or for a quote for your next vacation!
