Ministry of Magic: Does it Live Up to the Hype?

By:  Ashlee Nielsen, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

Universal Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida houses five immersive worlds that all truly feel like stepping out of the real world and into a world of fantasy. One of the most anticipated worlds is the third installment of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and it is only natural to compare the Ministry of Magic to the preexisting worlds of Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, at Islands of Adventure and Universal Studios, respectively. As I set out to explore Universal Epic Universe during the media preview days, there was one question I knew I needed to answer— Does this new Wizarding World live up to (or surpass) the reputation of its predecessors?

The answer to that question? Yes, and no.

What do I mean by that? Let me tell you.

Ministry of Magic: Does it Live Up to the Hype?

If you are strictly a fan of the original seven Harry Potter books (or eight movies), you will probably not feel as connected to The Ministry of Magic world as you do to Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley. This world expands into the realm of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them franchise, and all but the actual Ministry of Magic ride is set in 1920’s Paris. Personally, I love that Universal chose to dabble into the world of Fantastic Beasts, as there is so much canon content to bring to life from that world. Expanding on what we already know and love is a great way to ensure that these stories maintain their popularity for generations to come. However, if you go into this world with the expectation of seeing familiar characters like Harry, Ron, and Hermione at every turn, you will be disappointed. Utilizing a travel agent is the best way to ensure that you are not surprised (pleasantly or otherwise) by anything that you encounter when visiting The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, or any of the other worlds at Universal Epic Universe. Because the park is completely new, information about the worlds and experiences will not be as readily available as it is when planning a visit to Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, or Volcano Bay. Travel agents, on the other hand, are given opportunities to visit, experience, and learn all about the parks prior to their official opening to the public — meaning the best way to get answers to your questions from someone with firsthand experience will be to utilize a travel agent when booking your trip to Universal Epic Universe, as they will not only be able to answer any questions you may have, but will also be able to provide you with a detailed itinerary to help you get the most out of your day (or two) at Epic Universe!

Ministry of Magic: Does it Live Up to the Hype?

As previously mentioned, the majority of the Ministry of Magic world is set in 1920’s Paris, on the streets of Place Cachée. However, the attraction Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry allows riders to travel by Métro-Floo from Paris to the British Ministry of Magic, where Delores Umbridge is awaiting trial. Here is where you will find the characters that you know and love! In typical golden trio fashion, Harry, Ron, and Hermione encounter some trouble on their visit to the Ministry of Magic to witness Delores Umbridge’s trial. I won’t spoil the ride for you, but I will tell you this — on every level, the Battle at the Ministry is one of the most immersive and well thought out attractions I have ever experienced. Conceptually, this ride is brilliant. As a lifelong Harry Potter fan, I can promise you that 99% of true fans dislike Umbridge more than Voldemort himself, and have been waiting to see her get the punishment she deserves. This attraction provides an extension of the story that Potterheads have been itching for since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was released in 2007.  In addition to the amazing concept, this attraction features some of the best theming I have ever seen at a theme park, and this is coming from a girl who cried the first time she saw Diagon Alley in person.  Coming through the fireplaces via the Metro-Floor into the Ministry of Magic feels like you walked straight into your television screen while watching Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, when Harry and his friends take to the Ministry in an attempt to rescue Sirius. No detail was missed in the construction of this attraction queue, and I’m convinced you could walk through 100 times and find a new Easter egg each time.

The attraction is described as a thrill ride with motion simulation, similar to Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey over in Hogsmeade at Islands of Adventure, which is known to make some riders (including myself) experience motion sickness. Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, however, felt far smoother than Forbidden Journey, though I did still exit the ride with a bit of a headache. It was definitely worth it, but if you are prone to extreme motion sickness, this ride may irritate you slightly. Even if you are unable to complete the actual ride, I would 100% recommend still walking the queue, as there are so many amazing details for Harry Potter fans to enjoy. Traveling to the Ministry of Magic via Métro-Floo is something everyone should experience at least once!

Ministry of Magic: Does it Live Up to the Hype?

Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry also utilizes a virtual queue, and is the only attraction in the park to do so. When I visited Epic Universe for previews on April 20, virtual queues opened at 11:00 am, as well as 3:00 and 6:00 pm. As with any virtual queue system, return times are not a guarantee and can be quite tricky to get. I was eating lunch at the Oak & Star Tavern during the 3:00 virtual queue window and people in the restaurant were literally yelling with excitement when they snagged a return time. Unfortunately I also witnessed the disappointment of quite a few families who were either unable to get a return time, or who did not know/understand the virtual queue system, and showed up at the ride hoping to wait in a standby line, only to be told that the ride required a virtual queue return time. There are signs at the entrance to Epic Universe as well as throughout the Wizarding World, but those could be missed or misunderstood for a variety of reasons. When the park opens to the public, I am sure there will be even more people who are unable to ride Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry due to not knowing about the virtual queue system. While booking with a travel agent does not guarantee a return time, an agent can provide with not only the knowledge that a virtual queue is a requirement, but also offer tips and tricks to give you your best shot for securing a virtual queue return time for you and your family! The ride queue is also set up with a single rider line, but that line was not available during my preview date, and is not a guarantee to always be open even once they park is officially open to the public.

Other notables in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe:

Dining

  • Café L’air De La Sirène is a quick service restaurant, serving French inspired baked goods and meals for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Find the Butterbeer Crepe here!
  •  Le Gobelet Noir is hidden in the shadows of Paris, and is the perfect spot for dark witches and wizards to enjoy lunch, dinner, and drinks!
  • Bar Moonshine is a quick service bar serving up drinks and snacks for American witches and wizards visiting Paris!
  • Bieraubeurre Cart can be found on the streets of Paris, serving various forms of Butterbeer. The frozen is my favorite!

Entertainment

  • Le Cirque Arcanus: think Cirque du Soleil meets Newt Scamander’s suitcase of fantastic beats, in a live action show under the big top in the street of Paris.
  • Interactive wand experiences: just like in Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, you can use your want to cast spells and interact with the store window displays.

Shopping

  • Inside Cosme Acajor Baguettes Magique you can shop for the best wands Paris has to offer! Also be on the lookout for Cosme Acajor roaming the streets near her shop!
  • Find all the sweets your heart desires at K. Rammelle confectionary!
  • Les Galeries Mirifiques is a department store where all the cool witches and wizards are finding their international Wizarding school gear.

Photo Spots

The theming here is done so well, on par with the other Wizarding Worlds… feels just like you’re stepping back in time and across the ocean to Paris. One of my favorite parts of the theming is all of the painted posters that adorn the exterior walls of the majority of the buildings. I found so many spots that would be great backdrops for photos, and many are tucked away so you wouldn’t be stopping in the middle of a crowd while you get the perfect shot!

Final Thoughts: Does The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic at Epic Universe live up to expectations?

For me, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic is 100% just as immersive and entertaining as Diagon Alley and Hogsmeade. I don’t know the intricacies of the Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them series as well as I do the original Harry Potter series, but I still found so much to do and see while in this area of Universal Epic Universe. The attraction Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry alone is worth a visit to this world when you are exploring the park. Even if you don’t enjoy thrill rides and aren’t a Harry Potter or Fantastic Beasts fan, I think the Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic is worth a visit just for the excellent theming, and a nice cool glass of frozen Butterbeer on a hot Orlando day!
