If you’ve ever looked at a Sandals resort and thought, “There’s no way scuba diving is actually included,” you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I hear most often from clients.
The surprising answer is yes.
If you’re PADI certified, Sandals includes up to two scuba dives per day, professional dive guides, boat transportation, and most dive equipment as part of your stay. Considering that a week of diving at many Caribbean resorts can easily cost hundreds of dollars per person, it’s one of the most valuable inclusions Sandals offers.
But there are a few important details you should know before you arrive. Here’s exactly how it works and what I wish someone had told me before my first Sandals dive trip over 14 years ago.
Yes. Certified divers can enjoy up to two boat dives per day at participating Sandals resorts, weather and availability permitting.
Sandals’ dive program is operated by professional dive teams who are PADI certified and trained who know their local waters exceptionally well. Whether you’re exploring coral reefs, dramatic walls, marine life habitats, or wreck sites, you’ll be diving with guides who spend every day on those waters and keep safety at the forefront of everything they do.
Before you arrive, there are a few things to keep in mind:
You’ll need proof of certification before you can dive. Most resorts accept digital certification cards, but I always recommend bringing a physical card or having your certification number readily available as a backup.
A simple photo saved on your phone can be a lifesaver if you need quick access.
If it’s been more than six months since your last dive, you’ll be required to complete a checkout session in the dive pool before heading out on a boat dive.
This includes:
If you answer “yes” to certain medical questions, you may need physician clearance before participating. Taking care of that before your trip can save valuable vacation time. Your marvelous mouse travels travel planner can assist you in making sure you are prepared.
Sandals does not offer solo or self-guided diving.
For most travelers, this is actually a major benefit. The dive teams know the local sites, understand current conditions, and often point out marine life that less experienced divers would never notice on their own. You’ll also be split into groups and by certification level.
While you can dive throughout your stay, weather conditions occasionally impact schedules. If there are certain dives you’re excited about, plan them early in your vacation rather than saving them for your final days.
Many resorts also offer optional specialty dives, including night dives, for an additional charge. This is an incredible way to see additional marine life and highly recommend talking to the dive shop team once you arrive.
You still have options.
Sandals offers a Discover Scuba Diving experience designed for guests who want to try scuba diving without completing a full certification course.
The pool portion is included in your stay, while the open-water dive is available for an additional fee. It allows you to dive during your stay but doesn’t provide advanced certification for any other dives beyond the duration of your stay.
It’s a great introduction to the sport and gives you a chance to experience breathing underwater before deciding whether certification is right for you. Once you’ve determined how you feel about the equipment it can really help drive the rest of your experience.
That said, if you think there’s even a small chance you’ll want to dive again in the future, becoming certified is usually the better value.
Why?
Because once you’re certified, those included dives become available to you for the rest of your stay. Over the course of a week, that could mean up to 14 dives included in your vacation package.
One of the biggest surprises for many guests is that you can earn your PADI Open Water certification right at the resort, there’s also advanced courses for those who may want to explore more beyond your initial certification.
This is actually how my husband and I became certified, and it completely changed the way we travel.
My biggest piece of advice is simple: Visit the dive shop as soon as you arrive.
Don’t wait until the next morning. Don’t assume you’ll figure it out later. The sooner you meet with the dive team, the sooner you can begin the certification process and maximize your time underwater.
The certification process typically includes:
And that’s when the fun really begins.
If you finish certification early in your trip, you can spend the rest of your vacation enjoying the included dives.
That’s exactly what we did, and we’ve been diving at Sandals resorts ever since.
This is where Sandals really stands apart from traditional dive vacations.
Many people imagine spending entire days on dive boats and sacrificing their resort experience.
That’s not what happens here.
A typical morning might look like this:
Dive in the morning. Be back at the pool bar by noon.
That’s the rhythm of a Sandals dive vacation, and it’s one of the reasons so many couples love it.
You’re not choosing between a diving trip and a luxury Caribbean getaway.
You’re getting both.
With Sandals resorts located across Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Barbados, Antigua, Grenada, Curaçao, The Bahamas, and Saint Vincent, every destination offers a unique underwater experience. When you reach out to one of our Marvelous Mouse travel planners, they can help guide you to the resort that best suits your diving and vacation needs.
One trip might focus on vibrant reefs and sea turtles. Another might feature dramatic walls, caves, or wreck diving.
No two islands feel exactly the same above or below the water.
While every Sandals resort offers diving, a few destinations consistently stand out among scuba enthusiasts.
The best choice ultimately depends on your experience level, travel style, and what type of diving interests you most.
One of the best parts of diving at Sandals is how little you actually need to pack.
Sandals provides:
For many travelers, that’s everything needed for a successful week of diving.
One thing Sandals does not typically include is a wetsuit.
Caribbean waters are warm year-round, but some divers prefer the added comfort and protection. You can usually rent one at the resort or bring your own if you already have a favorite.
Even if you plan to use Sandals’ equipment, I recommend bringing:
The underwater world in the Caribbean is remarkable, and photos never quite do it justice.
Without hesitation, yes.
For many travelers, the real question isn’t whether diving is included.
It’s whether learning to dive, getting certified, or making time for diving during vacation is actually worth it.
From my experience, absolutely.
What started as something I wasn’t sure I’d ever use has become one of my favorite parts of traveling together as a couple. Every island offers something different, every dive creates new memories, and the experience adds an entirely new dimension to a Caribbean vacation.
The value is incredible.
You’re getting professional dive operations, quality equipment, knowledgeable guides, boat transportation, and access to some of the Caribbean’s most beautiful dive sites, all included as part of your stay.
More importantly, you’re getting experiences you’ll remember long after your tan fades.
If you’ve been considering certification, this might be the trip that finally inspires you to take the plunge.
