During my recent trip to Punta Cana, I toured several resorts throughout the destination, but Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana was one I was particularly interested in seeing firsthand.
As a travel advisor, I spend a lot of time helping families choose the right all-inclusive resort. Some resorts are geared heavily toward couples, while others focus almost entirely on children. What I found at Hyatt Ziva was a resort that does a really nice job of balancing both.
My biggest takeaway? This is a resort that was clearly designed with families in mind, but it doesn't forget about the adults.
One of the things that makes Hyatt Ziva unique is that it shares a property with its adults-only sister resort, Hyatt Zilara Cap Cana.
While children are welcome only on the Ziva side, adult guests staying at Hyatt Ziva can access select restaurants, bars, and amenities at Hyatt Zilara. I think this is a huge benefit, especially for multigenerational vacations.
Parents and grandparents can enjoy a quieter dinner, an evening cocktail, or some adults-only time without leaving the resort, while the family still gets all the benefits of staying at a resort designed for children and teens.
For families traveling together, it really feels like the best of both worlds.
Food is one of the first things my clients ask about when considering an all-inclusive resort, and I was impressed by the variety available at Hyatt Ziva.
Guests can enjoy Dominican-inspired cuisine at The Chinola, Asian flavors at Noodle & Thread, and a variety of other dining venues throughout the resort. For adults, the ability to access select restaurants at Hyatt Zilara adds even more variety throughout the week.
I also loved seeing Coffee Republic on property. Having a dedicated coffee shop serving specialty coffees, pastries, and grab-and-go snacks may sound like a small thing, but it's often one of the most appreciated amenities during a vacation.
I think one of Hyatt Ziva's most underrated strengths is El Mercado, the resort's main buffet.
Let's be honest—when families travel together, the buffet often becomes one of the most important restaurants at the resort. Grandparents want one thing, teenagers want another, and younger children may only want chicken tenders or pasta.
A weak buffet can make dining surprisingly frustrating.
That definitely wasn't the case here.
What impressed me about El Mercado was that it didn't feel like an afterthought. The space felt bright, modern, and well-organized, and there was enough variety that everyone in the family could find something they enjoyed. The presentation was attractive, the stations were easy to navigate, and it felt much more like a dining destination than simply a backup option.
After touring several resorts in Punta Cana, I would consider El Mercado one of the stronger family-oriented buffets I saw.
For guests looking for something truly special, Hyatt offers The Blind Butcher, a premium dining experience available for an additional charge.
Unlike the included restaurants, this experience is currently priced at approximately $189 per person, so it won't be for everyone. However, it's also unlike anything else I saw during my time in Punta Cana.
The Blind Butcher combines dining with storytelling and entertainment. The experience revolves around the mystery of a legendary butcher and guests become part of the story as the evening unfolds.
Without giving away too many details, there are theatrical elements, surprises, and interactive moments woven throughout the meal that make it feel much more like an event than simply dinner.
What I liked most is that Hyatt created something unique. Many resorts have steakhouses. Very few have a restaurant that guests will still be talking about months after they return home.
For couples celebrating an anniversary, parents looking for a special night out, or anyone who enjoys immersive dining experiences, The Blind Butcher is definitely worth considering.
Hyatt Ziva offers accommodations ranging from standard Junior Suites to upgraded Club Level accommodations and Swim-Up Suites.
The rooms felt fresh, bright, and comfortable without being overly flashy. I think most families would be perfectly happy in the standard Junior Suite categories, especially since there is so much to do throughout the resort.
Guests wanting something a little more special may want to consider an Ocean View room or one of the Swim-Up categories, while Club Level accommodations offer additional amenities and upgraded locations.
One thing I appreciated is that the entry-level rooms still felt like a quality experience. I never felt like guests needed to book the most expensive room category to enjoy the resort.
Since Hyatt Ziva is first and foremost a family resort, it's worth talking about what makes it appealing for younger travelers.
The biggest draw for many families will be the Canapolis Water Park. Unlike some resorts that advertise a water park and then offer a couple of small slides, this is a legitimate attraction that gives kids a reason to get excited about the resort before they even arrive. Between the slides,
splash areas, and dedicated spaces for younger children, it's easy to see why many families spend a significant part of their vacation here.
The resort also offers a Kids Club with supervised activities, giving younger guests an opportunity to make friends and participate in games and crafts while parents enjoy some time on their own.
For older kids and teenagers, I think Hyatt Ziva strikes a nice balance. There are organized activities available, but there is also enough freedom to enjoy the pools, beach, water park, and sports facilities without feeling like everything is structured.
One thing I always look for when touring family resorts is whether there is enough to keep children entertained beyond the first day or two. Hyatt Ziva passed that test for me. Between the pools, beach, water park, activities, and entertainment, I can easily see families filling an entire week without hearing the dreaded "I'm bored."
Perhaps most importantly, the resort manages to offer all of these family-friendly amenities without making adults feel like they are staying at a theme park. That balance is one of the reasons Hyatt Ziva stood out to me during my visit.
After touring the resort, I think Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana is an excellent fit for:
While couples can certainly stay here, I think the resort truly shines as a family destination.
Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana isn't trying to be the most luxurious resort in the Dominican Republic, and it isn't trying to be the biggest party resort either.
Instead, it focuses on creating an enjoyable vacation experience that works for a wide range of families, and I think it does that very well.
Between the family-friendly atmosphere, access to Hyatt Zilara for adults, strong dining options, one of the better buffets I toured, unique experiences like The Blind Butcher, plenty of activities for kids, and comfortable accommodations, Hyatt Ziva offers a well-rounded all-inclusive experience that I would feel confident recommending to many of my clients.
If you're planning a Punta Cana vacation and looking for a resort where grandparents, parents, teenagers, and younger children can all enjoy themselves, Hyatt Ziva Cap Cana should absolutely be on your shortlist.
