Gluten-Free Dining on the Disney Wish and Castaway Cay

By:  Erin Sudomir, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

You have decided the Disney Wish is a beautiful ship.  You know your family would love this one of a kind Disney Vacation on the seas.  But Something is holding you back:  you or someone in your family has an allergy.  This is when you want a travel planner who has been in your shoes, someone who can guide you through the process.  Here are a few highlights from my recent voyage and gluten-free dining on the Disney Wish.

Fresh Berries & Cream Dessert Gluten-Free Dining on the Disney Wish

From the minute I stepped on the ship my dining experience began.  I chose to eat in Arendelle, which is a beautifully themed restaurant with table service dining.  I reviewed my dietary restrictions, including my gluten allergy, with the team of servers.  We checked some labels and reviewed some options.  Soon, I had a beautiful plate including a steak, baked potato and vegetables.  For dessert, fresh red berries and cream were served.

Gluten-Free Dining on the Disney Wish

There were three main restaurants on the ship. Each night we would rotate to a different restaurant, and our servers joined us in each of the dining rooms.  The experience was seamless. The main dining restaurants on the Disney Wish are 1923, World of Marvel and Arendelle: A Frozen Adventure.  They were themed beautifully.  And our serving team made sure the magic and the theming was not interrupted.

Let’s talk about desserts!  The chef created some delicious selections for me.  Some were modified from the main menu and others were unique creations.  My server talked with me on the first night and asked about my preferences.  These were incorporated into each meal including my desserts.  One evening I had a lychee dessert served in the World of Marvel dining room.  It was so great I asked for it on the final night also.  They changed the coloring of the dessert so it matched the winter theme of Arendelle.  Additionally, they surprised me with panna cotta, as I had mentioned to the server that it was my favorite dessert. This was a fantastic surprise.  If you eat gluten free, breads and desserts may be available.  If you are lucky enough they are good. But every once and a while they are great!  This was my experience on the Disney wish.

I have mentioned theming a few times. Disney is the gold standard when it comes to a perfectly themed experience.  The attention to detail sets Disney apart from other experiences.  Each night the server would bring me a menu for the next night's dinner.  I would choose my meals in advance so that my food was not delayed the next day.  They would walk me through all three meals if I chose to do so.  I decided to order breakfast from room service.  Lunch was in a different location each day.  I would also select my meal for the following night.  But as I mentioned, they protected the theme.  So while dining at The World of Marvel, they brought me the menu from Arendelle’s.  However, the menu was located in an Avengers folder.

Castaway Cay Steak Gluten-Free Dining on the Disney Wish

I would like to share my experience at Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay.  My experience begins with preordering my lunch the night before at dinner.  Because of my many dietary restrictions the chef asked if I would be okay having steak for lunch.  So steak and fresh vegetables were my island treat.  There was even a special window where I checked in and they verified my lunch and my allergies on the island.  I had a time window of a few hours to come for lunch.  My food was cooked as I waited at a shaded table and I enjoyed some iced tea. Sometimes you don’t want to have every detail of your vacation planned in advance.  The flexibility to choose my lunch time and location each day was amazing.

Overall the culinary team on the Disney Wish and at Castaway Cay were amazing.  I felt heard.  I felt they took my allergies seriously and I would recommend traveling with them if you have allergies or dietary restrictions.
