Epic Universe Ride Guide: What Plus-Size Guests Need to Know Before They Go

By:  Jennifer Suissa, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

As a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels I was lucky enough to preview the all-new Epic Universe at Universal Orlando Resort before it opens to the public, and I know just how exciting (and overwhelming) a brand-new theme park can be—especially for guests who may be concerned about size restrictions or ride comfort.

Let’s be real: no one wants to spend their vacation worried about whether they’ll fit on a ride. That’s why we’re breaking down everything plus-size and taller guests need to know before visiting Epic Universe. The good news? Universal has made some smart, inclusive design choices that go a long way in helping every guest feel more confident and included.

Test Seats = Peace of Mind

One of the most guest-friendly features we noticed was that almost every major ride has a test seat outside the entrance. These are clearly marked and allow you to check comfort and fit before you get in line. Whether you're a plus-size rider, tall, broad-shouldered, or just want to avoid surprises, these test seats are a huge help.

What to Expect: Ride-by-Ride Breakdown

Here’s what we found during our visit, along with verified details on restraint types and size-friendliness:

  • Constellation Carousel – This celestial-themed ride includes bench-style or chair-like creatures as well as straddle-style animals. These are a great option for guests who want more space or struggle with mobility issues.

  • Stardust Racers – This thrilling dual-launch coaster uses pull-down lap bars that must lock to ride. The lap bars are similar to VelociCoaster's and can be tight for some guests. A test seat is available right inside, before the ride entrance.

  • Curse of the Werewolf – A spinning coaster that uses an individual pull-down lap bars. The ride, although smooth may be uncomfortable for those with motion sensitivity. How much you spin will depend on the weight distribution in your cart.

  • Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment – A dark ride with over-the-shoulder restraints. The middle seats are slightly wider, and early feedback suggests this ride is far more inclusive than similar attractions in other Universal parks.

  • Dragon Racer’s Rally – A high-flying, flipping ride (if you prefer) that uses over-the-shoulder harnesses. This one can be tight for guests with broader upper bodies or larger chests.

  • Hiccup’s Wing Gliders – A family launch coaster with pull-down lap bars. Taller riders may find the legroom snug, but the restraint system is generally more accommodating than shoulder harnesses. Test seats are right by the entrance to the ride.

  • Fyre Drill – This interactive water cannon ride features bench seating with no restraints. It’s a fun and very plus-size-friendly attraction—just be ready to get wet!

  • Battle of the Ministry of Magic – A trackless dark ride using individual lap seat belts. Early riders have praised it for being comfortable and more accessible for a wide range of body types.

  • Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge – This AR-enhanced ride features snug molded seats and a pull-down lap bar that must lock into place.  This is probably the most restrictive ride in the park, and the seats can create a weird suction that makes getting out of them difficult.

  • Mine Cart Madness – This Donkey Kong-themed coaster uses pull-down lap bars for each rider. The ride features sharp, jerky motions that could be a little tough on guests with past injuries, joint sensitivity, or mobility concerns. Test seats are available at the entrance, and we definitely recommend giving them a try to make sure you're comfortable before hopping in line.

  • Yoshi’s Adventure – A charming, slow ride with pull-down individual lap bars. While it seems like a calm attraction, it can be deceptively tight around the hips.

Our Best Tips for Plus-Size Guests

  • Always use the test seat—they’re there to help and save you from awkward moments in the queue. Most of them are discreetly set to the side, right near the entrance to the ride, and some include a red light / green light to let you know if it fits.
  • Ask for middle seats or back rows when appropriate—they often offer more space.
  • Don’t be afraid to speak to Team Members. They’ve been trained to assist guests respectfully and discreetly.
