Do You Want to Build a Droid at Disney?

By:  Jen Travis, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

As someone who grew up watching Star Wars, on the day Walt Disney World opened Galaxy’s Edge the first thing I wanted to do was build my own droid (and ride Rise of the Resistance). As a family of three, we could not decide which droid we wanted more.  See, I am obsessed with BB8 whereas my husband and daughter have a strong passion for the all-time classic R2D2. At the end of the day no choice is a bad one, but why choose? One of the fabulous things about the droids you can make at The Droid’s Depot located in Galaxy’s Edge of Hollywood Studios is that the droids can all interact with each other as well as other droids located throughout Galaxy’s Edge.

When planning your day at Hollywood Studios or Disneyland Park, you absolutely want to make a reservation if building your own droid is something you want to do. If you do not have a reservation, you can use the walk-up queue, but depending on demand and how busy the theme park is that day, the wait time can be very lengthy. The Droid Depot is in the Black Spire Outpost’s just next door to Ronto’s Roasters and Savi’s Workshop at both parks. The cost to make a droid is $99.99 per droid and includes a carrying box. The droid options are a BB-series and an R-Series. Additionally, they sell backpacks for $49.99 to carry your droid in while you are in other sections of the park or
when you are heading home via the airport.

Once you check in for your reservation there is a short wait in a line to pick out your droid’s colorful array of components and then move over to a build station. When you arrive at the station there is a mat outlining how to assemble your BB-series or R- series droid. Once it is all put together it will be paired with a remote control and activated as you watch your droid come to life. There are also cast members available to help you with your droid. Finally for an additional cost of $12.99 you can have one of three personality chips installed in your droid. The options are The Rebellion, The First order, or The Scoundrel.

You have built your droid, now what? Now is where the magic happens. Throughout Galaxy’s Edge at both Disneyland and Walt Disney World, your droid will use its Bluetooth capabilities to engage with, react, as well as talk to droids made by other guests and those located throughout Black Spire Outpost. Did you know your droid comes with its own app? The Droid Depot app allows you to bring the experience home with you. Once your droid is paired to the app you can choreograph a dance sequence, drive your droid around, play a game of tic tac toe with your droid and more!
