A Day in the Life on the National Geographic Quest

By:  Dana Sabat, a Marvelous Mouse Travels agent

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to sail with National Geographic Expeditions, imagine a small ship with fewer than 100 guests, exploring places most travelers will never see. It’s not a typical cruise, there are no pool decks or shows, but every day is packed with adventure and  learning.

Our Itinerary: Panama to Colombia

Our expedition on the National Geographic Quest took us from Panama to Colombia, and it felt like we were traveling through a completely different world each day. We started with a full transit of the Panama Canal, watching the ship rise and lower through the Miraflores Locks — something that’s way more impressive in person than you expect.

From there, we explored the Darién Rainforest, where monkeys & birds were spotted. Then we made our way to the tiny coastal towns of Capurganá and Sapzurro, connected by a lush rainforest trail and some of the warmest people we met the entire trip. One of my favorite moments was enjoying fresh fruit and a cocktail at a tiny beachfront restaurant in Capurganá after our hike.

We ended at the Sanguaré Nature Reserve — and were welcomed with traditional Colombian dancers and music. It was one of those experiences that reminds you travel isn’t just about seeing places, but connecting with people and culture too.

Morning: Coffee, Beautiful Views, and Curious Wildlife

Mornings on the National Geographic Quest start slow. I usually grab a coffee in the lounge before heading to breakfast. A regular coffee maker provides both caffeinated and decaf for the early risers.  There’s also a cappuccino & latte machine with fancier offerings! .

Breakfast is relaxed and fresh — tropical fruit, eggs, local pastries and more!  Everyone  chats about what’s ahead,  maybe a Zodiac ride through the mangroves, a rainforest hike, or snorkeling near a coral reef.

If you book through a travel agent, they’ll make sure you know exactly what to expect on these days — what gear you’ll need, what time to arrive, and how to make the whole trip run smoothly. They can even help arrange flights, transfers, and pre- or post-cruise stays so you can just focus on the adventure.

Late Morning: Zodiacs and Discovery

A Day in the Life on the National Geographic Quest

The Zodiacs are one of my favorite parts. These small, sturdy boats take you right up close to wildlife and landscapes you can’t reach on a big ship. One morning we cruised through mangrove tunnels surrounded by birds and monkeys; another day we landed on a completely deserted beach.

Each outing is led by experts — naturalists, photographers, and guides who love what they do. Their enthusiasm is contagious, and you can tell they genuinely care about protecting the places we visit.

Afternoon: Adventure and Learning

Lunch is always delicious, often featuring fresh seafood or local flavors. Then it’s back out for another round of exploring. Maybe it’s a guided hike, a kayak paddle, or a visit to a small village. Every stop connects you a little more to the destination — not just seeing it, but understanding it.

When you return to the ship, the crew greets you with cold towels or cocktails   (such a nice touch!). Later, there’s usually a recap talk or photo presentation that ties everything from the day together.

Evening: Sunsets and Shared Stories

Evenings on the Quest are some of my favorite memories. Everyone gathers for cocktails and chats about the day — the animals we spotted, the hikes we survived, or the funny things that happened on the Zodiacs. The vibe is friendly and casual, like you’re traveling with a group of friends who love exploring as much as you do.

Dinner is relaxed but feels special, with good conversation and a focus on local ingredients. Then, when the night sky fills with stars, you realize just how far you are from the rest of the world — and how lucky you are to be here.

Why Book Through a Travel Agent

Expedition cruises like this are unique, and planning one can feel a little overwhelming at first. A travel agent who knows these trips can take the guesswork out of it.

Here’s why it helps:

  • They know which itineraries are best for your interests and fitness level.
  • Sometimes they can often access promotions or extras that aren’t available online.
  • If anything unexpected comes up — weather, flight delays, etc. — they’re your go-to person for help.

It’s nice having someone in your corner who’s already familiar with how these trips work and can make sure everything fits together perfectly.
