5 Myths Dispelled About Cruising

By:  Marvelous Mouse Travels

When I talk to people about why I love cruising, they oftentimes bring up myths they’ve heard and using them as reasons not to cruise. Sometimes the information is outdated and other times it is completely false! Below I will explore 5 common myths to help educate new cruisers!

1. You can pack whatever you want

While there is no limit on the luggage you bring on a cruise, you actually can not pack ANYTHING you desire! First, you need to remember that if you are flying, that the airline won’t necessarily allow certain items. Most cruise lines will allow an alloted number of l beverage on a cruise. Things such as bottled water, soft drinks, and even a limited number of bottled wine per guest is allowed. Remember, prohibited items vary by cruise so it’s best to seek help from someone knowledgeable in each cruise line!

2. You have to eat at a set times

Over the years, dining has become more flexible since the early days of cruising. If you desire to eat in the dining room (especially for dinner), most cruise lines offer drop in dining. You can now walk up to the dining room and put your name on a list as you would on land. If you don’t want to eat in the dining room, most every ship has numerous  food options such as room service, buffets and sandwich and pizza stations!

3. You have to dress up on cruise ships

Over the years, cruising has become much more relaxed in terms of attire. You can pretty much wear whatever you’re comfortable in with exception of the main dining rooms and specialty restaurants. Most nights, a ‘smart/cruise casual’ look is preferred in the dining rooms. Smart/cruise casual is typically pants, shorts, dress, or skirt paired with a shirt that is not sleeveless (for the men). If you come in a swimsuit and flip flops they will most likely direct you to a more casual dining area. Some cruises still have the occasional formal night where you are welcome to dress to the 9’s.

4. There’s nowhere to work out or exercise

I’ve never met a cruise that didn’t have a gym! Most ships have exceptional gyms equipped with all types of equipment, free weights, classes, saunas, and much more! Most times, you can find a jogging track on board as well as outdoor morning fitness classes. If working out is your thing on vacation, cruising has you covered!

5. Everything’s Included with your cruise fare

Although there is a lot that is included in your cruise fare, there are some extras that can be accrued. Typically included in your fare is your cabin (room) and taxes and port fees. Automatic gratuities can be added prior to boarding as well. Things typically not included are soft drinks (besides Disney Cruise Line), alcoholic beverages, bottled water, specialty dining, souvenirs, bingo cards, and casino cash! Of course each cruise line varies but this is a general idea of what you may need extra money for!

It’s important to know what cruise line will suit your family’s needs. Having a trusted well versed travel agent will help you navigate the process.
